RESEARCH

If you are auditioning for a specific film project, make sure to look up as many details about the project as possible. Make sure you know the subject matter backwards and forwards so as you create your audition you will be on the same page with the director.

The more facts you know about the part you would like to play, the better you will play it. Better still if you have have some personal experience with the part you are auditioning for. That is why the actors in the film, “The 15:17 to Paris” a 2018 American biographical drama film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood were the actual people involved the story! Although they were not actors they were able to play the part because they could relate to the story, possibly better than any other “real” actor.

CREATE A SCENE

Now that you know about the part you are auditioning for, you can create your audition layout. Choose the type of audition you will perform (monologues, songs/vocal auditions, voice-overs, physical, improvisation or others) and build one or more scenes based on that particular technique. Ideally, you would use the monologue technique, as this shows the actor’s range of acting skills. Now using the facts about the part you would like to play in the film, create a monologue.

NOTE: Make sure to be aware of your body/facial language, as the camera will pick up EVERY LITTLE MOVEMENT that you make! Body language and the actor’s emotional state cannot be denied on camera, so make sure to incorporate body language into your audition planning process that fits the narrative.

CRITIQUE YOUR PERFORMANCE

Once you believe you have the perfect audition video and have the body language techniques down pat, now you need to practice your audition a few times.

Film yourself performing your audition, take notes and then film your audition again. Self-critiquing is a very important quality as an actor so that you can stay flexible. Directors would rather work with flexible actors who are not as talented instead of actors who think they have it all figured out. Consequently, by self-critiquing you will probably beat someone else to the punch when you need to tweak some technique or verbal line.

Once you have filmed your audition video a few times and you think you have your audition perfect…..then do it in front of an audience! It does not have to be a big audience, even if it is your mom or best friend. Getting an outside perspective is always a good thing!

FILM YOUR AUDITION

You are now armed with the facts about your character, the body language tricks up your sleeve and the critiques/advice from both yourself and others….

So the next step is to film your final audition video!

The camera and sound setup does not have to be fancy….just set up the camera and perform the scene the way you have practiced and do not worry about the rest. Do not worry about fun camera techniques or neat background sounds – The director is trying to cast an ACTOR’S role, not a director of photography or sound technician’s role. Good directors and casting agents will be paying attention to the acting skills, body/facial language and character development of the actor.

SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION VIDEO!

Now that you have the perfect audition video….here is where and how you submit it:

Create a YouTube channel and publish the video as “PUBLIC”. Even if you are creating a SPECIFIC audition video for a SPECIFIC project, future directors will want to see how wide your range of acting skills reach.

DO NO BE AFRAID TO SHOW OFF YOUR ACTING SKILLS!! Create a wide range of audition videos on your YouTube channel and add tags that relate to each video so that directors can find you/your type of acting easier. Directors want to know how far they can stretch you as an actor and they will be taking notes!

Finally, send us a link to your audition video through our contact page!
